Silverfish are hardy creatures and can live for several months without food. Their natural habitat is in soil, and under stones in the garden but they are particularly fond of insulated ceilings when they move indoors. They are often found in high numbers. Mostly active at night, they prefer areas with higher humidity. They feed on food rich in carbohydrates, in particular they eat the paste in book bindings, along with paper and also fabrics. They have also been known to eat mould, glue, toothpaste, plaster and cardboard.
